How to Prepare for the 2024 CVSA International Roadcheck

This year’s CVSA International Roadcheck is scheduled for May 14 - May 16! The primary aim of this annual law enforcement event is to encourage transportation companies to take proper care of their vehicles and motivate truckers to drive responsibly.

During the 72-hour blitz, CVSA’s inspectors will closely monitor the roads of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The International Roadcheck is widely considered to be the largest enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world.

What Will the Inspections Focus On?

This year’s Roadheck will primarily focus on tractor protection systems and controlled substance and alcohol possession or use

According to the CVSA’s informational flyer, during the inspection of tractor protection system components, inspectors will:

  • Ensure the wheel chocks are still in place and have the driver release all the brakes by pressing dash valves.

  • Have the driver carefully remove the gladhands and allow air to escape.

  • Ensure the air stops leaking from the supply line with at least 20 psi remaining.

  • Listen and/or feel for any leaking air at the gladhand couplers on the trailer.

  • Request a full-service brake application by the driver.

  • Listen and/or feel for leaks from both airlines.

On the other hand, while checking for the presence of alcohol or controlled substances during an inspection, inspectors will:

  • Observe the driver for signs of alcohol or controlled substance use.

  • Examine the cab and trailer for alcohol or controlled substances.

  • Conduct a query in the DACH (for inspections in the U.S.).

Apart from the focus points, inspectors will also conduct their routine North American Standard Level I inspection. This kind of inspection involves an examination of all important vehicle components, as well as driver documentation and requirements.

How to Pass the Inspection?

While it may seem way more rigorous than it is, the International Roadcheck inspections are actually not much different than regular inspections. All you have to do is regularly maintain your semi-trucks, and prevent controlled substance and alcohol possession in the workplace.

These are some bonus tips on how to pass the inspection:

Keep your vehicle clean - Keeping your vehicle clean is not just about appearances; it also speaks volumes about your commitment to safety and compliance during the inspection. A well-maintained and clean semi-truck not only indicates professionalism but also facilitates an easier inspection process.

Familiarize yourself with the regulations - CMV regulations are being changed frequently, so getting to know them is essential for passing the International Roadcheck inspections. Being familiar with the nuances of safety protocols, load regulations, and documentation requirements is your advantage when preparing for an inspection.

Start preparing immediately - Don’t wait for the last moment! Now is the right time to schedule regular checkups at your local truck center, check your documentation, and identify all other issues that may prevent your vehicles or drivers from passing the inspection. If your fleet is based in the Midwest, you might want to book a preventative maintenance appointment at our partnering truck repair facility in Illinois - they offer big discounts at the moment!

Additionally, there’s a possibility that inspectors will check your Hours of Service (HOS) documentation, so you would also want to make sure your ELDs are properly functioning and compliant. Possible Inspection Outcomes

Once the inspection is complete, inspectors will let the driver know whether they passed or not. If there are no critical violations found, the inspection was successful and the CMV gets a CVSA decal.

However, if critical violations are found, the vehicle and/or the driver (depending on the violation type) will be placed out of service until all issues are resolved.

Conclusion

The International Roadcheck 2024 should not be perceived as CVSA’s trying to punish fleets and drivers, but rather as an attempt to make the roads safer across the continent. By staying proactive, informed, and committed to safety, transportation companies and truckers can navigate the International Roadcheck with confidence, contributing to a culture of compliance and safety in the industry.
